a little black keys throwback | 10 AM automatic

one of my all time faves.

why I love the black keys…and why you should too.

I have been a Black Keys fan since 2001.  I remember buying The Big Come Up on vinyl  after my youngest brother told me about these 2 guys from Akron, Ohio that “play that heavy blues shit you like”.  I remember going to Waterloo in Austin to dig around for the record and loved it because it was white.  I forced my friend Layton to play it the second we got back to his house, where we found out about 30 seconds in to “Busted” that we loved what we were hearing.  by “I’ll Be Your Man” we knew that we had found our new obsession.

every album they have released since then shows you this awesome array of sound - we as fans can literally hear every musical influence that drives these guys.  from low delta blues to old east coast hip hop to early funk, they slightly push the boundaries with every song they put out. and if you love vinyl like I do, then you’ll really love the black keys…Thickfreakness was recorded in drummer Patrick Carney’s basement on an 8-track tape recorder, and Rubber Factory (my fave) was recorded in an abandoned factory.  you can hear every (good) crackle on vinyl, and it sounds soooo good.

their new album, Brothers, dropped today and it is full of the familiar, gritty, riff heavy blues that we all know and expect…but with a little more funk and hip hop than we’re used to.  you can hear the story of a tumultuous year in these songs - patrick’s divorce in “next girl” (with lyrics like “my next girl will be nothing like my ex-girl”) as well as the influence of both patrick and dan steeping themselves in hip hop and R&B (used to bring us the Blackroc album earlier this year).

if you love the black keys as much as I do, you will dig this album - it’s been on repeat all day for me.  if you haven’t heard them yet, get on board…and make sure you get it on vinyl.

FINALLY.

FINALLY.

may 2010 = new dead weather, the national, black keys, sleigh bells…whew!
